ESSEX
The Essex is now fully occupied! In only 16 days, we helped 84 people move from shelters or the streets to their new homes. Community Housing Partnership recently completed the rehabilitation of the building, transforming it into affordable apartments for formerly homeless individuals. CHP’s dedicated staff worked together to make sure that our new tenants would be able to settle into their homes as quickly as possible after the building opened. Already, the Essex is a lively community!

Formerly an underutilized tourist and residential hotel, the Essex was transformed into 84 studio units for adults who have been homeless. It is the first project CHP has financed with low-income housing tax credits and tax-exempt bonds. We partnered with Mercy Housing California to develop this project, and CHP is the owner and operator of the building. Construction began in March 2007 and the building opened in February 2008.

Grand Opening Celebration at The Essex
Community Housing Partnership and San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom Welcome 84 Formerly Homeless Adults to New Home
On April 17, 2008, Community Housing Partnership (CHP) and Mercy Housing California (MHC) hosted the Essex Grand Opening. Project partners, staff and tenants were joined by Mayor Gavin Newsom in celebrating the building as a solution to homelessness. Citi Community Capital and Enterprise sponsored the event.
“San Francisco homeless initiatives have quickly become a model as the right approach to ending chronic homelessness on a local, national and global level. San Francisco has proven that ending chronic homelessness is possible and no longer just an ideal," said Mayor Newsom.
