Success Story

Tim joined the Recycling Internship Program to learn more about environmental issues, especially recycling. Throughout the 3-month program, he conducted outreach to the 54 tenants in his supportive housing building to educate and encourage them to recycle. With the assistance of the Property Manager, Tim was able to implement a successful recycling program which has lead to a 50% reduction in the building’s outgoing trash as well as $500 saving in their monthly trash bill.

Tim is now working as a mentor to the new Recycling Intern at his building. "The experience I’ve gained from the recycling Internship helped me understand why I need to do my part for the community, environment and the planet. For me, it all comes down to keeping this recycling program going in my building."

Supportive Housing Employment Collaborative – SHEC

In 1996, several San Francisco social service agencies joined forces to ensure that their formerly homeless clients connect with resources that are tailored to their special needs. These agencies share a mission—to help the formerly homeless achieve long-term economic and personal stability—and an understanding of how to help this population overcome multiple barriers to employment. The SHEC's purpose is to coordinate these agencies' resources by providing educational and vocational opportunities to more than 225 tenants each year.

Who is the SHEC?
SHEC member agencies are:

Chinatown Community Development Center
Community Housing Partnership
Conard House
Episcopal Community Services
Hamilton Family Center
Mercy Housing California
Swords to Plowshares

The Community Housing Partnership serves as the fiscal agent for the SHEC; however, the collaborative is governed by the Executive Directors of each member agency. The SHEC Steering Committee and Line Staff Committee meet regularly to provide direction and help manage the collaborative.

What is SHEC?

SHEC provides outreach, assessment, counseling, job placement, and job retention services to formerly homeless tenants who live in affordable housing.  SHEC provides a network of referrals to the training and education programs offered by the member agencies, including adult basic education and GED preparation, life skills and job readiness training, computer skills training, and on-the-job training programs.  SHEC also offers volunteer opportunities, internships, and referrals to short-term job opportunities for those who need to build job readiness skills or are unable to maintain regular employment, but benefit from occasional participation in the workforce.

  • Last year SHEC served 227 people:
    • Over 55 percent enrolled in job training or education programs
    • 50 percent participated in short term employment
    • 18 percent found and retained permanent jobs
