On May 21st, 2008, people from across San Francisco united to rally against Proposition 98. The rally began as city residents from Chinatown, the Tenderloin, Bernal Heights and other neighborhoods converged on the steps of San Francisco City Hall to hear local leaders speak out against Prop 98, which would dismantle rent control and decimate environmental protections in California if passed.
San Francisco Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin was joined by speakers from almost a dozen local and state nonprofits and advocacy groups. Once the speaking was over, rally attendees went directly into City Hall to submit early absentee votes against the measure. This unique, multicultural event demonstrated that San Franciscans from all walks of life are united to save rent control and affordable housing.
The event was sponsored by CHP, Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center and Chinatown Community Development Center.
